Novi Police and Fire Department honors employees at annual awards ceremony

Novi Police and Fire Department recognized employees of the year at annual awards ceremony at the Novi Civic Center.

The awards included Firefighter of the Year and Police Officer of the Year.

Fire Protection Officer Andrew J. Copeland received the Fire Fighter of the Year Award. Copeland began at the Novi Fire department in 1994 as a Paid-On-Call firefighter. In 2001, he was hired in as a full-time Fire Protection Officer and has assisted as well as served in the capacity of Acting Fire Marshal.

In addition to receiving various awards of recognition over the years for his dedication, Copeland also serves as a member of the Public Safety Implementation Committee.

Kelly Mesh, dispatcher for the Novi Police Department, was the recipient of the Public Safety Civilian of the Year Award. She began her career with the Novi Police Department in 2000 after two years of service in the United States Army.

Mesh has also received various awards throughout her 12-year career, including five unit citations, and three letters of Commendation for meritorious service. Citizens have written her letters of gratitude to express their appreciation of her service.

Police Officer of the Year was awarded to Officer Anthony Avant. Avant, who has served the Novi Police Department since 2000, has held his position as a traffic officer and has assisted in the training of other officers.

For nearly 10 years, Avant has been dedicated to reducing traffic and preventing crashes at high-accident intersections. Along with being recognized as employee of the year on multiple occasions, several merits, and unit citations, Avant frequently receives gratitude letters from members of the community who are thankful for his service.
