by Rebecca Jaskot

A 600-gallon fuel spill has closed a ramp from I-275 to I-96 in Farmington Hills this morning, according to the Detroit Free Press.

According to the article, four semi trucks crashed on the icy roads around 5 a.m. this morning, two of which were tankers carrying fuel. Officials then closed the ramp from northbound I-275 to westbound I-96.

“We have environmental hazmat companies on the scene now cleaning up,” Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Rob Morosi told the Freep at about 8 a.m. “But 600 gallons is a lot of fuel, so we’re looking at several hours for that ramp to be closed.”

Traffic is currently backed up in the area. For a look at a live traffic map, visit Patch's Commute Page.

Blackstone Group is betting heavily on residential real estate, Chairman and CEO Stephen Schwarzman told CNBC on Monday.
Blackstone's Bet on Entrepreneurs
Monday, 11 Mar 2013 | 11:09 AM ET

In a wide-ranging conversation, Steve Schwarzman, Blackstone Group chairman & CEO, discusses his company's pledge to support innovation and weighs in on Dell's LBO, the private equity space, and the outlook on the market.

"Blackstone is now the largest owner of individual houses in the United States," Schwarzman told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" Monday, pointing to his company's $3 billion portfolio of residential real estate.

But given the nascent recovery in the housing market, they're not buying and selling them quickly but rather renting them out.

"It's a good business for us. It's a new thing, but it's also good for America," he said.
Schwarzman pointed to real strength in the automobile industry and housing as reasons to be bullish on the U.S. economy, citing increasing production in autos and average home prices heading higher in the last year.

Schwarzman also said that U.S. energy independence would be a major boon for the domestic economy.

"Everywhere I travel, the world [U.S. energy potential] is about the first thing that people talk about. If we can create energy in very large amounts at some of the lowest prices in the world, it's very logical that people from outside the United States are going to start businesses in the United States."

Schwarzman also predicted that there would be a "dramatic increase" in companies that utilize the energy chain, "if you can foresee a world in the future with natural gas powered automobiles, the savings would be absolutely huge and that would go into consumers' pockets," he said.

Schwarzman's company is also looking to support entrepreneurship in the U.S. through the Blackstone Charitable foundation and the Blackstone "LaunchPad" program, which this week was extended to the University of Central Florida.

"It's quite an interesting way to engage people with a wide range of outcomes," Schwarzman said. "A good idea can still overcome [regulations]. Some of the regulations are needed and some are creating difficulty for businesses," he said, in response to Subway founder Fred Deluca's comments on CNBC earlier this month that Subway 'would not exist' if similar regulations were in place when the company started.

The company is offering a $1.4 million grant as part of a $50 million entrepreneurship initiative. The company says that 60,000 students will have access to the program and estimates a potential to create 300 new ventures over the next 5 years.

Commercial real estate momentum grows

Commercial real estate momentum grows

Ted Benning

Last week the Atlanta Business Chronicle had its annual “Best in Real Estate Awards” presentation at the Fox Theatre.

It was a sold out event, with more than1,500 people in attendance. The Chronicle put on a good event with a well-paced awards ceremony, good food and good company.

There was a great crop of deals to celebrate. We have come a long way from the 2009-2010 awards when there were so few deals in the current year that the event was named the “Deal of the Decade” awards!

The last five years we have seen many good and some not so good organizations fail. The storms of economic change hit the region. Many organizations were washed or blown away due to poor planning or the circumstances of change.

But many were not.

These organizations have had the leadership and good fortune to be able to operate at different capacities in an altered market place.

They have had the spirit of resurgence that marks Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

They did not give up while the winds of the storm were upon us. They have survived and if the “Best in Real Estate Awards” were any indication, it looks like a little modest business success is coming our way. The region is fortunate to have great leaders in the real estate industry. The state of Georgia is a great place to locate your business.

Without sounding like Chamber of Commerce commercial, I have traveled all over the world and there is no other place like Georgia when it comes to people, resources, transportation and communication. The Georgia Department of Economic Development is doing a great job attracting good business to Georgia.

Many local, city and county governments also see the value in cooperating with business to bring jobs and a better tax base to their communities. Developers are thinking “outside the box” of the early 2000’s to find adequate capital for real estate investments.

The real estate community knows how to assemble successful teams of real estate agents, architects engineers and contractors to bring the deals on line.

The momentum seems to be shifting in a positive way.
